The programme
Three journeys, three levels, one ladder.
BBC is built around one idea: people learn to use AI best by building something real that helps their community.
Three journeys
Journey
Explore
A first look at how a field works as a business and which path might suit you. It is facilitator-led and is offered only after local advisers have cleared the age and consent rules for the country.
Journey, the core
Build
A team works through a real community problem from need to launch, with a facilitator.
Journey
Launch
Taking an existing solution into a second community, with a path to funding or income.
Three levels
The levels follow UNESCO's AI competency framework for students (Understand, Apply, Create) and the OECD and European Commission AI literacy framework, so schools and funders can see where BBC fits.
Level 1
Understand and use
Use AI tools well and safely.
Level 2
Apply and build
Use them to build solutions.
Level 3
Create and scale
Take a solution further, with a verified portfolio and a path to funding or work.
A ladder of skills
Tools are only supporting actors. Each rung describes what a learner can do.
- 1Chat and research with AI
- 2Create content and design
- 3Use no-code and AI app builders
- 4Automate tasks and build assistants
- 5Write code with AI
- 6Deploy and publish
- 7Operate and measure what you have built
Your own field, in five questions
Every learner looks at their own subject through five questions.
- Who benefits?
- Who pays?
- What does it cost?
- What rules apply?
- Who else already serves this need?
Who can take part
- BBC is for learners of different ages and backgrounds. Learners under 13 take part only in facilitator-led sessions.
- The first pilot is a facilitated eight-week Build journey for adults aged 18 and over.
- Facilitators are also trained and certified, as explained on the facilitators page.
- The plan is to keep access free or low cost for learners, with institutions and funders paying for cohorts. This is still being tested, and no prices have been set.
